New River Basin

"One Of My Favorites"

The New River Basin in North Carolina is considered by some to be one of the oldest rivers in North America.  It rises from the North Carolina Mountains near Tennessee State Line and continues into Virginia and West Virginia.  It has been referred to as the Backwards River as it flows from south to north. It continues into Ohio and finally into the Mississippi River and the Gulf Of Mexico.   In North Carolina the two main rivers in this basin are the North and South Fork of the New River.  Almost 30 miles of the South Fork before you cross into Virginia have been designated as a scenic river by North Carolina.  The New State Park is in this area and has several area campgrounds and access points which makes planning a trip on the river very easy.  Check out the New River State Park for information about this section of the South Fork.

South Fork New River

Twin Rivers Campground

The South Fork of the New River is arguably one of the most used rivers in this area of North Carolina.  With several outfitters and camping options this makes this section is also one of the most paddler friendly rivers in the area.   The New River State Park has camping at four different locations along the river.  There also eight other accesses along this section where allow for kayak launching but there are no camping facilities available.  Outfitters in this section include Zaloo Canoes, New River Outfitters, Riverside Canoes, Rivercamp USA, and Dusty Trail Outfitters.  If you are looking for private campground you can stop by Twin Rivers Campground and Rivercamp USA.  Both offer primitive and RV sites along the river.  Just before the confluence of the South and North Fork you will find Twin Rivers Campground.  In the bend around the campground there is a nice small Class II rapid.
